Gulfport and back to Bradenton Beach (Posted 5/26/09)

On May 13th we left Redington Shores and motored down to Gulfport to anchor off the city pier in Boca Ciega Bay. The next day we went ashore at the public dinghy dock to explore the old village which has antique and art shops and lots of restaurants. A very nice place to visit.

The next day our friend, Jack Grose, came to visit and we had a nice lunch with him at O'Maddy's Restaurant on the beach. Then the next day, Linda's stepsister, Diane picked us up and we went and picked up Linda's friend,Cindy, who she has known since they were four years old! We took them to lunch and had a great visit.

While we were anchored in Gulfport we had two evenings of thunderstorms with high winds. Because the bay is large, the protection was not good and it was quite wavy. We were happy to leave to return to Bradenton Beach as winds were predicted to pick up and blow for a few days. So on May 17th we left and sailed back to Bradenton Beach. As predicted after we got back we had two days of high winds and rain and just stayed on the boat.

The dinghy motor had been giving me fits so I put an ad on Craig's List on the internet and sold the "infernal combustion" monster! I have ordered a new electric motor and, in the meantime, have been rowing and "getting buff". :-)

On Memorial Day we walked to the public park and beach and collected shells. We also explored the Leftis Key Natire Preserve which has boardwalks through the mangrove swamps. It was a really nice place to see "wild" Florida.
